The Information Technology field is driven by unprecedented innovation and relentless change. Whether your organizational needs require computer engineering technologies, information sciences and support or just telecommunications, the IT field has never been more complicated—or competitive.  Interestingly, Chief Information Officers (CIO) are being promoted to Chief Executive Officers (CEO), a trend that is obviously driven by the insurgence of systems being incorporated into every aspect of business and the lack of awareness that the executives have over their total cost of ownership.

Systems Engineering is vital to the success of any project.  I've seen hundreds of bad and even catastrophic decisions that all revolved around misguided great ideas.  Typically those "great ideas" are part of the American dream to make a profit, by decreasing costs and increase productivity.  Inevitably, unknown costs creep up, productivity decreases and the project becomes part of a type of burden known as the "IT Tax".  A small choice over implementation of some software app can end up costing a company more than they realize.

An example of an organization paying an IT Tax is when they have an accounting system with customers that is separated from their scheduling system which also consists of their customers.  This type of simple duplication of effort sucks time and money from the net.
